Documentary film “Story of a Sundowner” featuring Nathan Fletcher and friends

If you had 38 minutes to peek outside the “mon-fri, 9-5 office life” confines to satisfy your curiosity of those that live the surf/skate industry lifestyle then this film is worth the watch.

You could call it proliferation of “counter culture” livelihood. We are human and we enjoy finding ways to live our lives standing on 2 feet (preferably on top of board that’s moving really fast).

Detaching yourself from what everyone else is doing or thinks is “right” can be difficult for some. If you live in modern society then try leaving your smartphone at home for a whole day and see what happens. Here’s a documentary about certain individuals who don’t find that task to be too difficult in today’s world.

Features include daily life for Nathan Fletcher and family, our buddy Dave Nelson and a host of others who keep things real in this life we live.

Keep an eye out for a little cameo appearance by a micro sized Koa Depuyt!

Nic Lamb wins 2016 Titans of Mavericks Event

On February 12, 2016, Nic Lamb paddled his 10’0″ Stretch Gun to victory at the Titans of Mavericks competition.

We simply always referred to it as “The Mav’s contest” over the years but despite who becomes the title sponsor, what dollars or points are awarded, the high profile glitz or the overall status, there’s one thing that remains the same. Maverick’s will take care of itself. Those who put in time at Mav’s know this.

There’s a crew of guys that know the ins and outs of Maverick’s. Nic Lamb is one of those guys. His commitment to physical conditioning, mental preparation, equipment choice and respect for something bigger than humans can fathom all paid off.

Big waves aren’t for everybody and it takes a certain type of surfer to engage in something like Maverick’s. It’s not an easy wave to surf. The wind, swell conditions, media and competitive field made it even more daunting. Nic has been envisioning these moments and training for them for a long time.

Congratulations on achieving an amazing goal Nic! Look forward to seeing what the future brings!

What he rode:

Stretch Gun round pin

10’0″ x 20.3″ x 3.4″

PU gun core with triple 6oz. deck and triple 6oz. bottom

Epoxy lamination

Stretch template quad g-10 3.75″ fronts with 3.75″ symmetrical quad rear pair

(same board from his 2015 win at Punta Galea)

And lets not forget the efforts put in by big wave stalwart Nathan Fletcher.

His Buzz Gun was a 10’2″ x 20.5″ x 4.5″ beast that seemed ready to paddle into something massive. There seemed to be a playfulness not common in a board with those numbers and when he leans it over on rail it shows hints of a new era of gun design developing for those who are willing to put their paddle power into some uncharted territories.

  • Bonus feature which shouldn’t be missed is our friend Anthony Tashnick inflating his rescue device for Shawn Rhodes in the same wipeout segment at the end of Nathan’s last wave.

And on a similar model to Nic yet different construction was the worthy endeavors of Ryan Seelbach in his heat 1 battle. Ryan rode a 10’0″ x 21.25″ x 4″ Stretch Gun round pin with CFT gun heavy construction, bamboo wood veneer bottom and custom color lamination.

Stretch and I arent’ really that short. It’s just that Ryan is a big guy!

…because if you had a chance to do a drop wallet layback on a 10’0″ then you’d probably do one too!

Stretch Boards is hosting a holiday open house event on Friday November 27th. We’ll be swinging open the factory doors to anyone who has always been curious as to what goes into making a custom built surfboard.

There will be light refreshments, beverages, working factory tours and face to face customer support for any surfboard related topic you can fathom.

Check out some cool new projects, unique custom builds not seen elsewhere, view a bit of Stretch memorabilia and join in on the community of surfers which make the Stretch Boards family what it is today.

Black friday deals on apparel, fins, accessories, stock surfboards and new custom orders will be in full effect also!

This event is in conjunction with Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County. Bring in minimum 4 non-perishable food items to receive extra special deals!

Our factory is located at the end of Tower Place just off Felt St. It is the largest dedicated epoxy glassing factory in North America and is unlike most every other traditional surfboard factory you will encounter. There is no VOC release or harmful chemicals, messy work areas or hazardous concerns (save for the dust factor). If you’ve ever been curious as to how a sustainable surfboard can be built then this is the perfect opportunity to see first hand!

Words of wisdom from Nathan Fletcher

Fatherhood, making an impression in heavy line-ups, the future of surfing and more…

Nathan once told me that smoking cigarettes helped with oxygen deprivation training for big waves. I would’ve called bullshit on his approach except that he paddles into waves that give me nightmares.
