The Four-Fin

The high performance quad movement is being driven by Nathan Fletcher. Most people don't realize Nathan's vision of the performance quad. He sees the board as changing the way that some people surf. Nathan doesn't believe, nor do I, that the quad is for everyone. But, in all fairness, a tri-fin will not work for everyone since we all surf differently. So some people will probably want to surf the way that a quad allows for. One ofthe key aspects of a quad is that it is fast and can be difficult to slow down. A tri fin can be check-turned and brought down. A quad won't do that very well. This makes it necessary to do maneuvers at higher speeds on a quad than you would on a tri fin. When you see someone doing a turn on a tri and they are throwing water into the air, they are bleeding speed. This is similar to the way a snowboarder throws snow into the air while carving: they are slowing down. With a quad you won't see nearly as much water going into the air because all of that energy transfers into speed throughout the board.
